The Award

                                                                               The Award

The marketplace was buzzing with activity, the crowds were roaming around the marketplace to buy things. The day was bright and shiny, and the breeze blew well, with a signature of  a calm spirit that had settled after a lot of turmoil. The Country had been going through a lot of problems, and it had just come out of its economic crunch.
The people were moving around in a releived sense of being, after the time had passed by. This was Ecuador, one of the most beautiful countries in the world, which had faced some real hard time. But now it had gone by, the people had watched it pass and waved it goodbye. Christmas was coming, and people were now preparing for the festivities. they wanted it to be the best this year, considering what they had gone through.

Among them, there was a man named  Juan Carlos. He used to stay near the market - with his parents , his wife and three children. He was the engine driver, driving the local train from his village to the other five villages around.
he too had seen the change. However, the tough times had not really affected him. He always knew people had to travel,
so the railways were still getting their customers. But he had to face a tough life , and what called a recession was mostly part of his life, and he knew how to handle it. But the work was hard, and he would complain about aches in his body to his family. The work on the engine was very tough, heaping coals, handling burning coals, guiding his men and
driving the train which had around a hundred controls which had to be used properly, checking the signals and all this had to be done in a specified deadline. All this was very stressful, and once work was over, he had to go home and work with his wife to tke care of their children. Their tiffins, their clothes and studies - all this meddle and throw in the parents , too. Even taking care of them, was another chore and a hard one. Luckily, his wife did most of the jobs for the parents. But that did not make the work any lesser, and he longed for a holiday like the ones he took before he was married, but the leaves he took went in maintaining his family, like a family outing to the local grounds. That is what he could get, because he got to see the green trees everyday, the scenery we long for is something he lived in, as his train passed through the beautiful green slopes of Ecuador. So a holiday for him would be ... more like a city, with buildings and cafes, hotels and bars. This was something he felt peaceful in.

One evening, he went to his neighbours place to relax and while doing so , he saw an award show going on where big celebrities were getting awards and recognition for their work. He watched the entire award show throughout till the end, and during all this time he was wondering that he did a lot of hard work himself , but he never got a single award all his life. The work he did was back-breaking, and probably much more that what the celebrities did. But there was not a single work of his efforts that materialised into a reward, forget that he did not even get a bonus. A thankless job, a thankless life, he thought. Nobody would give him an award, nobody knew his hard work, but himself. At his point, even his superior would not give a second thought to consider his work.

One day, he was walking through the market to his house. As he walked in the alley, he saw a shop. He had never seen the shop before. So he went closer to see what was in the shop. The shop was one that housed trophies and Awards. As he checked the showcase of trophies, his eye caught a beautiful trophy. It was at the corner, placed on the left side of the showcase. He stared at the trophy with eyes lit up. It was too beautiful for words. he spoke to the owner and asked him how much it would cost him. It was expensive, but it was something he could handle. So he left the shop ,but his eyes remained glued to the trophy.

He was thinking about it. Working all his life, he would not get an award. The people besides him would never realise the value of his work. Only he knew the importance of the work in his life and the amount of dedication it required. he knew the bits and pieces of small formalities that made upthe core of his work, making it important every minute. No person sitting on a chair calling himself an expert could understand the way he worked and the efforts that were put into it. Only he knew it himself and he knew that he was good, and not only good, but the best. And it had been 10 years and there had been no recognition. So he said " This is what I am going to do. I have worked for my family and company and there has been no recognition, not even a pat on the back for so long. So what am I going to do? I'm going to reward myself for my efforts and my contributions for which I have not been rewarded." So he told his family about the way he felt and his trouble and that he wantd to celebrate his hardwork. His family, who loved him very much said that on his weekly off, they would have a small celebration that they would hold for him. So during the weekend, they got good food and drinks and the children went with their father to bring the trophy. AS John had seen on television that awards were given by a senior person in the family, he asked his father to give him the award. So the event started with a serving of snacks and drinks, and some good music. It continued for an hour while John carlos's parents came in. They were dressed in their best, very smartly like they felt it had to be made grand.

Then came the time to get the award. John's father got up from his chair and toasted to his son saying " To the son who is harworking and honest and a pride to his family" after which he walked up to his son and presented the award with the family cheering on. John carlos was all smiles when he got the award. It may have been ten years on th job with no recognition, but it was a much longer wait since there were hard times before that, too. He said that he wanted to share the award with his wife, who had done a fantastic job in taking care of their children. He also mentioned that there were many men who laboured hard, not only as labourers also in offices and higher positions and never got the respect they deserved , so he would like to dedicate it to them and tell them to continue the hard work, as hard work is very important not only to keep homes running, but also to better the country. With that , he stopped talking and took a sip of  the fresh beer that wa brought in. So the party continued ... as a happy  John carlos sat in his chair, shakinghis arms to the music.
